The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has unveiled new technology that aims to prevent foreign objects, substances or illegal contraband from entering county jails.
The advanced body scanner technology aims to make a “significant enhancement in our efforts to maintain safety and security for both our inmates and staff,” said a statement from the department.
The Tek84 Body Scanners were first installed in August of 2024 at the West Valley Detention Center, the High Desert Detention Center and the Central Detention Center, according to SBSD.
Now, when someone is arrested and booked, they will undergo the non-invasive body scan.
“The scanner generates a detailed image that highlights any foreign objects or substances hidden on or within the person’s body,” the statement said. “Trained personnel analyze the images, quickly identifying any potential contraband.”
Since they were implemented, deputies say that the scanners have helped them locate weapons, illegal substances and other contraband items.
Officials say that the move comes with a noted increase in fentanyl and other illicit drugs making their way into county facilities.
