South Korean Samsung announced its latest lineup of foldable phones, smartwatches, TWS, and Galaxy Ring at the latest Galaxy Unpacked event. At the event, the company also teased the XR platform will be “coming this year”. A new report from Business Insider reported Google and Samsung partnered on a headset that will run Google’s XR software.
However, the launch is reportedly delayed to the first quarter of next year due to the challenges related to the product. Citing sources, the news outlet noted the Galaxy Phone maker is building a mixed-reality headset codenamed ‘Moohan’, which could be similar to the Apple Vision Pro. The model was expected to arrive in the first quarter of this year.
While the developer version may arrive in October, the consumer trim is tipped for March 2025. Samsung could be the first company to introduce smart glasses running Google’s OS for AR. Google is said to be running prototypes of Moohan and other gadgets, which boast a Qualcomm chipset. The search giant has no plans to introduce XR devices in the near future.
Despite the endeavours, the Extended Reality headset of Samsung is not “good enough to dazzle users”, the leaders at the company believe. For context, the mixed reality market has a strong contender in the form of Meta, which has the Quest headset and Ray-Ban glasses under its portfolio. Apple recently entered the space with its flagship Vision Pro headset, which starts from $3,499.
Google reportedly held talks with Meta for the Android XR experience. However, the Zuckerberg-led Quest maker rejected the idea due to the availability of Horizon OS. Coming to Samsung’s XR, the headset could sport micro OLED displays and a range of AI features. It is said to be powered by a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2/Gen 3 chipset. The headset could also get a range of cameras and sensors for hand and eye tracking.
