Samsung has added RCS support for Samsung Messaging, despite the smartphone giant switching to the Google Messages app.
Google Messages became the default messaging app on Samsung’s flagship phones in 2022. Samsung stopped preloading the app on phones last year and even started pushing users to Google Messages for most of 2024.
Samsung has even opted to push users on older Samsung devices to switch to the newer messaging system.
According to 9to5Google, the Samsung Messages app has been spotted supporting RCS, and they were able to test the feature properly, although the phones were unlocked. The Samsung Messages app is only available for download on the Galaxy Store.
Although this may seem odd considering Samsung’s change to Google messages, there is a reason for it.
In a statement to Android Authority, Samsung noted that it is moving to Google Messages. However, it opted to add RCS to Samsung messages for users who still want to use its previous messaging app. Samsung also stated that the app is no longer available on the Google Play Store.
In the same statement, Samsung added, “We believe that the added functionality of RCS messaging on Google Messages creates an enhanced user experience for both Android-to-Android messaging and across platforms.”
Google and Samsung aren’t the only cellphone giants opting to add RCS to their messaging apps. Apple added RCS with iOS 18, making communication between Android and Apple devices easier.
