Union Gap, Wash. — Students from the Yakima School District will head to Old Navy tomorrow, Saturday, for a shopping spree, thanks to the Salvation Army and local community sponsors.
But today, teachers and volunteers got an early start, shopping for students in need ahead of the larger event.
For weeks, the Salvation Army has been working closely with teachers and counselors to find the students who need clothing the most.
This year, around 600 children will benefit from the event, with each child receiving $100 worth of winter clothing, shoes, and other essentials.
Lisa Sargent, Yakima Corps Officer for the Salvation Army, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to help so many students.
“Just to know that a child in need is getting new clothing from Old Navy warms our hearts, not just mine, but those who participate, the teachers—we care so much about our youth and our community, and having this opportunity to raise funds and shop for kids, it’s amazing,” Sargent said.
For those who shopped today, the children will get their new clothes on Monday. Looking ahead, Sargent hopes to start the process earlier next year and expand the event to help even more children.
With over 30 years of community support behind it, this beloved event shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
