Retailers kick off holiday shopping season early amid changing trends

The holiday shopping season is starting earlier than ever, with retailers like Walmart already rolling out Black Friday deals.

Marc Brock, a store manager at Walmart on Eastern and Russell, said the store began transitioning its shelves in mid-October to prepare for the shopping rush.

“This year, based on customer feedback, we did our multi-week event,” Brock said. “One thing new this year is dropping new deals during the next event on walmart.com and the Walmart app. Online is November 25, and in-store is Friday, November 29.”

Despite the rise in online shopping, Brock noted that the day after Thanksgiving remains significant for in-person shopping. “The kids get excited, the parents get excited because it’s almost like it’s nostalgic back to their childhood,” he said. “Come into the store with your kids, family, and friends to have that experience all over again.”

Industry analysts from WalletHub reported that nearly 77 million Americans shopped in person on Black Friday last year.

The company has released a list of retailers offering the biggest discounts in 2024, including JCPenney, Macy’s, Kohl’s, and Walmart.

Shopper Alberto Espinoza Ramirez shared his enthusiasm for the season, saying, “We’re getting some bicycles for my grandsons, we’re getting some stuff like decorations for the Christmas tree.” He added, “It’s the spirit of Christmas that I never forget; it’s every year.”

Brock assured that there are deals to be had, with items priced under $25 to ensure customers find what they need. “Stocking the shelves every day,” he said.

While Black Friday continues to draw shoppers, most retailers will close their doors on Thanksgiving, allowing employees a much-deserved break.
