STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Businesses at a Castleton Corner shopping center had a busy Saturday as they made repairs and evaluated the damages caused by a 70-year-old motorist who crashed her Hyundai sedan into three storefronts Friday afternoon.

Steve Rubin, owner of Todt Hill Wine and Liquors, said he had yet to fully assess the cost of repairs, but that the driver, who police say “lost control” of her vehicle caused damage to his storefront, two lotto machines, and shelves-worth of merchandise.

“I wasn’t here, so I don’t really know,” Rubin said. “Thank God she the didn’t kill anybody. That’s the main thing.”

Spokespersons for the NYPD did not respond to a request for comment Saturday, but told the Advance/SILive.com Friday that they didn’t suspect criminality in the incident that occurred at 754 Manor Rd. around 2:33 p.m. Friday.

First responders also told the Advance/SILive.com Friday that one person suffered injuries in the incident, but a city Department of Buildings (DOB) spokesman said Friday night that four people had been injured in the incident.

That DOB spokesman said that there was no structural damage to the three locations hit — Todt Hill Wine and Liquors, a branch of Chase Bank, and a SuperFresh Supermarket — so the department did not issue any vacate orders.

An inquiry to SuperFresh was not returned Saturday but the business looked to be operational around 10:30 a.m. Customers could also be seen coming and going from the liquor store.
