GRAFTON — RAM Tool Inc. has been awarded the prestigious title of Ozaukee Economic Development Business of the Year, a recognition that celebrates the company’s remarkable journey, commitment to quality and community engagement.
Founded by Roy and Arlene Kannenberg, RAM Tool began its operations manufacturing core pins with a lathe originally intended for snowmobile parts. As Mercury Marine relocated its operations, Roy Kannenberg saw an opportunity and dedicated himself to growing his own business out of his garage — a decision that has paid off significantly.
Over the years, RAM Tool has undergone a transformative evolution but has remained a family-owned business, with Roy and Arlene handing over the reins to its current owners, their daughter and now-President Michelle Polum and her husband, Vice President Dennis Polum.
A pivotal milestone came in 2006 when the company expanded into custom machining, significantly enhancing its capabilities. By 2018, RAM Tool made additional strategic moves, securing contracts with major clients such as Harley-Davidson and major players in the aerospace industry. This diversification has been instrumental in shaping the company’s direction and resilience amid challenges.
Like many businesses, RAM Tool faced adversity during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, since they were deemed essential, the company reopened after a brief three-day closure.
Additionally, the transition of leadership from Roy Kannenberg to the next generation has ensured a seamless continuation of RAM Tool’s legacy, with a focus on sustained growth and community engagement.
Looking ahead, RAM Tool is committed to diversifying its customer base to reduce reliance on a few major clients. The company is also exploring opportunities within the medical field, although this pursuit is still in its early stages. As they prepare the third generation for leadership roles, nurturing the company culture remains a priority.
The Kannenberg and Polum families emphasize a family atmosphere, treating employees as part of the team through regular events and celebrations that enhance camaraderie.
Community involvement is at the heart of RAM Tool’s ethos. The company actively participates in the Grafton Chamber of Commerce and offers youth apprenticeship programs that expose local students to manufacturing. These initiatives not only support workforce development but also strengthen the bond between RAM Tool and the community.
The OED recognition reinforces RAM Tool Inc.’s commitment to excellence, ensuring a bright future as it continues to grow and serve both its customers and community with pride.
RAM Tool, along with glaze Art & Ice Cream, and Hometown Heating, Air & Electric will be honored the annual OED Business of the Year Awards and Economic Forecast Breakfast on Thursday at the Ozaukee County Fairgrounds.
