Millions of Florida residents remained without power Friday in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, with one major power company saying its infrastructure was “severely damaged.”
Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, on Friday morning cited some progress on that front, saying that power had been restored to 1.6 million residents. Still, more than 2.4 million Florida residents remained without power as of 11 a.m. Friday, according to the independent PowerOutage monitoring website. One major energy company in the state said it hoped to restore power to most areas in a matter of days.
DeSantis also said that 96 percent of the state’s roads had been cleared and noted the removal of debris from the state’s barrier islands.
“People have been working around the clock,” DeSantis, said at a Friday morning news briefing, adding that “we did not get the worst-case scenario. We’re going to bounce back.”
