While France has the shortest gold medal odds at DraftKings (+230), this isn’t the same team that made it to the World Cup Final in 2022 and just made it to the Euro semifinals, as each country is required to send their U23 squad to the Olympics.

That said, each team can send three players over the age of 23. France’s older players are Alexandre Lacazette (who is 33 and plays for Lyon in Ligue 1), Jean-Philippe Mateta (who is 27 and plays for Crystal Palace in the Premier League) and Loic Bade (who is 24 and plays for Sevilla in La Liga).

France’s U23 team is unbeaten in 2024 and is led by French coaching legend Thierry Henry, making them a formidable challenge for the Americans.

The U.S. junior squad tied France 2-2 during the Olympic qualifying window in March and now adds senior team stalwarts Walker Zimmerman, Miles Robinson and Djordje Mihailovic to their squad.

This marks the first time the U.S. has been in the Olympics since 2008, so Marko Mitrovic’s squad will want to make an impact in Group A. While Robinson, Zimmerman and Mihailovic shouldn’t be rattled by the Olympic environment, this will be the biggest stage that many of the U23 players have played in.

For the Americans to pull off the upset, they’ll need players like Benjamin Cremaschi, Taylor Booth and Paxten Aaronson to play beyond their years.
