WT’s Back-to-School Job Fair set for Aug. 29

CANYON — West Texas A&M University’s Back-to-School Job Fair will run 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 29 on the Charles K. and Barbara Kerr Vaughan Pedestrian Mall in the center of the Canyon campus.

Registration deadline for companies was Aug. 15.

During the come-and-go job fair as the 2024-2025 school year begins, students will look for parttime employment opportunities both on- and off-campus.

“Connecting students with these employers from their early college years will promote greater connections within the community and, ultimately, a better network for our students as they enter the job market,” said Shelby Ford, assistant director for the Office of Career and Professional Development.

Randall County Agriculture Day and Crops Tour set for Aug. 27 in Canyon

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host the 47th annual Randall County Agriculture Day and Crops Tour on Aug. 27 in Canyon.The event will take place 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Kuhlman Extension Center, 200 N. Three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units will be available for private pesticide license holders, including two general units and one drift minimization unit.

The morning session will include the following topics and speakers:

  • Weather patterns and outlooks — Joanne Culin, warning coordination meteorologist, U.S. National Weather Service, Amarillo.
  • Program updates — Jeff Lewter, district conservationist, U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service, Canyon, and Samantha Dutcher, director, USDA Farm Services Agency in Randall County, Canyon.
  • Insurance programs and updates — Rachel Myers, owner, Myers Crop Insurance, Claude.
  • In-depth look at livestock risk protection insurance and its benefits — David Baumann, manager, Box Five Land and Cattle LLC, Amarillo.

The noon luncheon will feature keynote speaker Josh Winegarner, director of government relations, Texas Cattle Feeders Association, Amarillo. Winegarner will be speaking on cattle feeding policies, as well as provide participants with a cattle market outlook.

The afternoon sessions will feature two live demonstrations of the latest farm equipment and techniques used in farming. Topics and demonstrators will be a drone aerial herbicide application demonstration with Jeff Haggard, production manager, Advanta U.S. Inc., Canyon, and Smooth Agricultural Ranch Rover, a robotic cattle feeding unit demonstration with River McTasney, chief executive officer and co-owner, and Hunter Allemand, chief financial officer and co-owner, both with Smooth Ag Solutions Inc., Graham.

Southwest Media Group announces sale of radio stations, pending FCC approval

PAMPA – Southwest Media Group, which owns radio stations KGRO, KOMX, and KRWP has announced that the stations have been sold pending FCC approval. The Theater Group LLC, owned by Pampa businessmen Jason Scott and Troy Schwiegerath finalized the agreements for the transaction recently.

“We are pleased to announce the sale of these legendary radio stations to local owners,” owner Grant Merrill said. “Jason and Troy are well respected in Pampa and care deeply about the community. We are grateful to our listeners and advertisers who have supported us during our ownership of the station and wish the new owners nothing but the best in this new endeavor.”

Scott and Schwiegerath are the longtime owners of the Cinema Four movie theater in Pampa, and have other successful business interests in the area. The Theater Group LLC will begin operating the stations via a local marketing agreement as of Sept. 1.

Liming and clearing ponds topic of Aug. 20 webinar

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will present the webinar “Liming and Clearing Ponds” from 6-7:30 p.m. on Aug. 20. Cost is $35, and advanced registration is required at https://tx.ag/LimingPonds.

Todd Sink, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension aquaculture specialist and associate professor in the Department of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management, will be the featured speaker. Sink is also director of the AgriLife Extension Aquatic Diagnostics Laboratory in Bryan-College Station. A 30-minute question-and-answer session will be held at the end of the webinar.

Industry Insight Series to feature guest speakers in Groom, Panhandle, and Claude
