Alexandria is a famously romantic locale and Lotus Blooms, an adult and lingerie shop at 1017 King Street, wants to help local couples make the most of Valentine’s Day tomorrow (Friday).
Teal Dye, owner of Lotus Blooms, said Valentine’s Day is the busiest time of year for the shop.
“Valentine’s Day is hands-down our busiest time of year,” Dye said. “It even edges out Christmas (yes, really—people do buy sex toys and lingerie as holiday gifts!) and the Alexandria Warehouse Sale, rounding out the top three busiest days of the year.”
Dye said Valentine’s Day offers couples a chance to reconnect and invest in their relationship.
“Valentine’s Day is synonymous with relationships, and while any time is a good time to invest in your relationship’s intimacy, the February holiday provides a tangible date on the calendar for people to go beyond chocolates and flowers,” Dye said.
Dye said the store’s top sellers in February included couple’s toys, red lingerie, lotions and more. Like much retail in Old Town, Dye said the last few years have been a rollercoaster for Lotus Blooms.
“As we enter yet another uncertain moment in history, our commitment remains the same: providing a space where people can seek pleasure, joy, and self-care,” Dye said. “Our doors (and bathrooms!) will always be open as a haven for those who need a safe and welcoming space, including our queer and trans friends.”
Dye also offered some advice for customers doing some Valentine’s Day shopping:
- Shopping for lingerie? Sneak a peek at your partner’s drawer and snap a picture of their size tags—this helps us find the perfect fit. (We don’t do returns because, let’s be honest, you wouldn’t trust us if we resold pre-loved intimates, toys, or apparel!)
- Is this gift truly for them… or for you? If you’re buying lingerie, ask yourself: Does my partner love feeling sexy in lace? (A gift for them!) Or do I just want to see them in it? (A gift for you.) Thoughtful gifting makes all the difference.
- Sex toys make amazing gifts—if you’ve had the conversation. If you’ve never discussed incorporating toys into your sex life, a surprise gift might feel presumptuous. Instead, try pairing locally made CMS massage oil with a gift card and writing, “I’d love to take you on a date where we can explore what brings us pleasure—together.”
