How U.S. News & World Report ranks online education for veterans
According to U.S. News & World Report, “Veterans and active-duty service members gain the most from distance education that is affordable, accessible, and reputable. The 2025 Best Online Programs for Veterans rankings evaluate these factors with a particular focus on the financial benefits available to those with military experience.”
To qualify for the veterans-focused rankings, programs must be offered by institutions certified for the GI Bill®. These institutions must also either participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program or be public universities that offer in-state tuition, fully covered by the GI Bill®, for veterans applying from out of state.
What is the Yellow Ribbon program?
Ohio University’s participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program underscores its commitment to providing educational opportunities for veterans. This program helps cover tuition and fees that exceed standard GI Bill® benefits, particularly for veterans attending private colleges, graduate programs, or out-of-state public institutions. The program operates through a partnership between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and participating schools, with the institution contributing a portion of the costs beyond GI Bill® coverage.

Ohio University supports its over 3,500 military-connected students through resources like the Brigadier General Abraham and Colonel Greenfield Veterans and Military Student Services Center.
