ATLANTA — The longest college football season in history concludes Monday night in Atlanta as Notre Dame and Ohio State face off inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The Buckeyes (13-2) have been on a tear through the College Football Playoff, winning their first two games in blowouts before a slight scare vs. Texas ended with Jack Sawyer rumbling 83 yards on a fumble return to secure a 28-14 win. Notre Dame’s path has been a bit more challenging. The Fighting Irish were never threatened in the first round against Indiana and pulled away from SEC champion Georgia in the quarterfinals, but they had to rally from a 10-point deficit against Penn State to advance to the program’s first national championship appearance since 2012.
There’s no shortage of history and lore around these two blue bloods, who have combined for 21 national titles in their history. Ohio State last won the title in 2014, the first iteration of the CFP. Notre Dame’s drought stretches back to 1988 under coach Lou Holtz.
