Alexandria’s City Council voted last week in favor of a new process to encourage the building and operating of more electric vehicle charging stations around the city, Patch reported.

The city’s Energy & Climate Change Action Plan says by 2030, 50% of car sales should be electric, while by 2050: 100% of car sales should be electric.

A presentation showed that Alexandrians are adopting electric vehicles faster than the national average — in Old Town and Carlyle there are 1,017 electric vehicles — but that the city has insufficient chargers to keep up with the need.

The city has located 27 places where public electric vehicle charging could be offered, including Alexandria parks and libraries. The city is soliciting proposals through Sept. 13 from vendors to install more electric vehicle charging locations, after which those will go to City Council for review.
