The Havre Northstars came off a split weekend last week and rode momentum from their two wins on Sunday in Lewistown to Lethbridge to take on the Miners on Wednesday night. Havre split two games at home with Lethbridge at the end of June and the results were a (11-9) loss and a (5-4) thriller that ended in defeat.
Game one provided Havre offense from the jump. After going quietly for the first two batters, Jevin Jenkins smacked a two-run home run to left field to give the Northstars a (2-0) lead. It was his second home run of the season. Two batters later, Chason Mader doubled in Logan Kinsella and then Tommy Lewis immediately tripled in Mader. Quinn Elliot then proceeded to single in Lewis. They would score again in the third inning on an RBI double by Terek Shipp.
Lethbridge answered back in the fourth inning, putting up a seven-spot to go ahead in the contest. The Miners batted around the order and had two extra plate appearances, including an at-bat that went for an error to put the home team in front. The lead would not last long as in the next half inning, Ezra Pyle sacrifice bunted to score Colter Solomon and then Tyson Brandon tripled home Shipp to make it (8-7) Havre. Lethbridge again surged ahead in the bottom of the fifth by scoring three more times. The Northstars got one back in the next frame and even had the tying run on base, but couldn’t come through at the end.
Game two was not as high scoring, but still produced some notable moments. The teams traded zeroes on the scoreboard until the third inning when the Miners scored three times. Havre answered in the fourth inning with Mader providing a two-run single to score Jenkins and Kinsella. The Northstars also scored multiple runs in the fifth inning on sacrifices, but were unable to push across the tying and go-ahead runs. In the seventh, Havre got a runner on in the form of Shipp. He was able to steal second base, but a pop out and lineout ended the game.
It’ll be a quick turnaround for Havre because of the schedule changes. They’ll be back at American Legion Park on Thursday night against the Medicine Hat Knights. First pitch is scheduled for 5pm.
