NFL news updates: 49ers’ Christian McCaffrey out vs. Jets; Rams’ Puka Nacua to miss at least 4 games

Must read

All but two of the NFL’s 32 teams have opened their 2024 campaigns, and the fallout from Week 1 is here.

From a few big injuries that will impact the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams and Cleveland Browns, and nearly every fantasy league out there, to what’s next with the Tyreek Hill incident in Miami and the quarterback situation in Pittsburgh, it’s sure to be a busy week off the field.

Yahoo Sports has you covered with live updates, news and notes from around the league as the season is now underway.

The 49ers’ star running back will miss the season opener against the Jets on Monday night. A calf strain limited the 2023 Offensive Player of the Year throughout training camp and he sat out of every preseason game last month. McCaffrey initially suffered the calf injury early in training camp. News of McCaffrey being sidelined comes as a surprise after McCaffrey and head coach Kyle Shanahan reassured fans and media repeatedly throughout the preseason that he was on track to be ready to play in Week 1.

Puka Nacua to miss at least 4 games

Rams star wideout Puka Nacua will go on the IR after suffering a sprained PCL on Sunday night against Detroit, Rams head coach Sean McVay told reporters on Monday. Nacua will miss at least four games.

Nacua had four catches for 35 yards before leaving Sunday’s game. He was carted off the sideline after the second quarter and did not return.

Browns tight end David Njoku is considered “week-to-week,” according to head coach Kevin Stefanski. Njoku suffered an ankle injury during Cleveland’s blowout loss to Dallas. He underwent tests Monday and it remains to be seen if he’ll be available for the Browns’ Week 2 game against the Jaguars.

After a calf injury to Russell Wilson late in training camp put Justin Fields in the starting lineup for Week 1, the Steelers head into Week 2 with a question at quarterback after an 18-10 win at Atlanta in which Fields threw for 156 yards.

Josh Allen is apparently good to go. Allen was cleared to practice on Monday and should be able to compete in Thursday night’s game against the Dolphins after he injured his hand in their win over the Cardinals.

Allen landed awkwardly on his non-throwing hand while scoring a rushing touchdown in the second half of Sunday’s win, though he remained in the game the rest of the way. Allen went 18-of-23 for 232 yards with two touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns in the win.

  • More details regarding Tyreek Hill being detained outside Hard Rock Stadium

Per sources, Tyreek Hill received two citations as a result of his traffic stop Sunday: Careless driving and a seatbelt violation. Calais Campbell, who said after the game police told him they briefly placed him in handcuffs for “disobeying a direct order,” did not end up receiving a citation. The Miami-Dade Police Department told me this morning that it remains an internal investigation so they cannot yet provide the details into what led to the citation for careless driving or why Hill was detained face-down on the ground in handcuffs. One of the officers on the scene remains on administrative duty.

Hill was handcuffed outside Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium just hours before the Dolphins kicked off against Jacksonville. Hill was eventually released and played in Miami’s 20-17 victory.

Hill told reporters after Sunday’s game that he had “no idea” why he was detained. “Wasn’t disrespectful because my mom didn’t raise me that way. Didn’t cuss,” he said. “Still trying to figure it out.”

  • Steelers need a new punter/holder with Cameron Johnston done for the year

  • Cowboys TE Jake Ferguson week-to-week with MCL sprain.

Ferguson hurt his knee after he tried to hurdle a Browns player during the Cowboys’ 33-17 win on Sunday. The tight end had three catches for 15 yards before exiting the game.

ESPN’s Todd Archer reports that Ferguson could be available for Week 2 against the Saints.

  • Giants, Daniel Jones hear boos on and off the field.

It was a forgettable opening day at MetLife Stadium for the Giants during their 28-6 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

The boos were loud and some players, like defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence, didn’t appreciate it.

“I don’t respect it, honestly,” Lawrence said. “I get it, they want to see their team win. It’s just a rough patch. It is what it is.”

Some fans even took to booing Daniel Jones as he exited the stadium following his performance that saw him go 22-for-42 with 186 yards and two interceptions.
