New Orleans costume store that dressed movie stars, Mardi Gras krewes is closing forever

Must read

A Central Business District warehouse that specializes in Mardi Gras and theatrical costumes is closing its doors after 13 years of business in New Orleans.

Southern Costume Company has manufactured and sold costumes from its 9,000 square-foot warehouse to film industries, Mardi Gras krewes and walk-in customers since 2011, according to its website

The closure comes shortly after the writers’ strike against Hollywood movie studios last year caused the New Orleans film industry to be in limbo for months.

Owner and costume supervisor and designer Wingate Jones decided to follow in the footsteps of his father, who ran Western Costume Company in Los Angeles, and brought Hollywood-inspired costumes to the south. Before moving to New Orleans and opening up his own company, Jones worked in the costume industry for years, including his position at Universal Studios’ wardrobe department, the website says.

Now, during its final days, the company is having an in-store sale, where customers can fill a bag with leftover costumes for $5. Washers and dryers, sewing and embroidery machines and office furniture are also on sale.

Friday and Saturday, from noon to 6 p.m., are the only times left to purchase items from the store, according to the company’s Facebook account

The website implied that those interested can inquire about purchasing the building, which includes a sewing studio, dressing rooms and office spaces.

Southern Costume Company is located on 951 Lafayette Street.
