Google‘s autocomplete feature has come under scrutiny for allegedly omitting search results related to “Trump Assassination Attempt” and “President Donald Trump.” Users have reported seeing empty results for queries about the Pennsylvania rally shooting, with alternative suggestions including the “failed assassination of Ronald Reagan” and the “assassination of Archduke Ferdinand.” Notably, searches for “President Donald Trump” are instead showing results like “President Donald Duck” and “President Donald Regan.”
Elon Musk highlighted this issue by sharing screenshots on X, questioning whether it indicates election interference.
“Wow, Google has a search ban on President Donald Trump! Election interference?” Musk wrote.
This has fueled controversy, with social media users accusing Google of attempting to influence the upcoming election.
“Just one of the many ways the left rigs elections in their favor,” one person wrote on X.
Another commented, “Democrats CANNOT win without interfering and cheating in every Election.”
A third person commented, “Democrats can’t win unless they cheat. If you aren’t awake to that fact, you better open your eyes. We are living in orwellian times. The Ministry of Truth is unfolding right now.”
Another user wrote, “Trump’s campaign must file the Mother Of All Lawsuits against Google for aiding in rigging the 2024 election.”
Donald Trump Jr. also weighed in, suggesting that Big Tech is deliberately trying to interfere in the election to benefit Kamala Harris.
“Big Tech is trying to interfere in the election AGAIN to help Kamala Harris. We all know this is intentional election interference from Google. Truly despicable,” he wrote on X.
In response, a Google spokesperson told The NY Post that no manual actions were taken to affect these predictions. The spokesperson explained that the company’s systems include “protections” against autocomplete predictions “associated with political violence.”
“We’re working on improvements to ensure our systems are more up to date. Of course, Autocomplete is just a tool to help people save time, and they can still search for anything they want to. Following this terrible act, people turned to Google to find high quality information– we connected them with helpful results, and will continue to do so,” the spokesperson told the outlet.
