MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital ranked No. 2 nationally in pediatric care

MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital has once again been named top in the nation by the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Children’s Hospitals rankings.

“We are proud of our No. 2 national ranking. It is well-deserved and demonstrates that the families in South Carolina and the entire Southeast region have access to some of the best pediatric care in the nation,” said Mark A. Scheurer, M.D., MUSC chief of Children’s and Women’s Services. “Providing care for a complex heart patient requires a comprehensive team, and this remarkable accomplishment indicates that Cardiology and Heart Surgery, along with our other subspecialty programs, are consistently performing at the highest level.”

The MUSC Health Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center remains number one according to the rankings, marking the second time in three years that the center has achieved this ranking.

Overall, this is the 17th consecutive year that the Cardiology & Heart Surgery program has made the list.

Judging criteria included patient survival rate after complex heart surgeries, the number and expertise of specialized staff, the availability of specialized services and advanced technologies and the hospital’s ability to prevent infections.

In addition, the hospital ranked on the national list in four other categories, including number 24 for Nephrology, 30 forGastroenterology & GI Surgery, 38 for cancer and ranked 13 for the southeast’s Best Children’s hospital.

According to the U.S. News & World Report, they create these annual rankings to help families with complex and rare conditions find the best medical care for their children. The rankings are designed to steer parents and caregivers to the hospitals that are best equipped to treat their children.
