MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) — The Montgomery City Council has approved a resolution to support infrastructure improvements for the future campus of Percy Julian High School.
The council’s vote Monday night authorizes Mayor Steven Reed to execute an agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) for the construction of traffic signals and roadways needed for the new school.
Planned improvements include installing a new traffic light at the intersection of Eastern Boulevard and Lagoon Business Loop, modifying an existing traffic signal at Eastern Boulevard, Lagoon Business Loop, and Roy Hodges Boulevard, and operating and maintaining another signal in the same area. Additionally, Todd Road will be cut off at Robinson Circle, with a new road providing access to the intersection. The project will also include new sidewalks and streetlights.
District 2 City Councilwoman Julie Turner Beard, a graduate and former teacher of the high school—formerly known as Robert E. Lee High School—expressed excitement about the progress.
“It’s just an awareness that we’re moving forward, and I am so proud that everybody voted on this road situation,” Beard said. “I’ve been out there several times. It’s just nice to see progress in that neighborhood to bring some life out there. It’s going to be a beautiful campus. I’m just ready to put the shovel in the dirt and put the new sign up. We’re ready to go!”
Beard also noted plans for a fountain in front of the new high school. The construction of Percy Julian High School is expected to take several years to complete.
