MILAN, Mo. — This summer, the Milan Municipal Pool will not see anyone using its slides or jumping off the diving boards.
The City of Milan announced on February 4 that the city is canceling the 2025 swim season due to urgent repairs needed to address the facility’s aged infrastructure
“The nearly 40-year-old, facility that, unfortunately, we’re faced with some critical infrastructure updates that are needed,” said Milan City Administrator Crystal Bupp. “There are more and more Band-Aids that we’re seeing, that the, the pool needs, and they’re coming more and more frequently and more and more expensive. “
One recent problem at the 38-year-old facility included a significant leak that would need major repairs for the pool to operate.
The city council voted that it was in the city’s best interest to not open this year so that they could take a step back and consider all the options for the future.
“Not only to maintain, but then, you know, we want to position the city where we’ve got a recreational facility that is sustainable, for years to come and we’re at a point where we need to kind of push pause and evaluate,” Bupp said.
The city will be issuing a Request for Proposal (RFP) and will be bringing in professionals to look at the pool so they can find the most cost-effective solution long-term.
“Getting some professional opinions on what updating the existing facility looks like from a financial standpoint and then also what does it look like if we built a new aquatic center or a new aquatic facility from a financial standpoint,” Bupp said.
Milan city officials told us that they do not have an exact timeline if and when the pool will reopen, but they want to do their due diligence and be transparent with residents.
As they continue their investigation, they will let residents know what the best course of action for the future could be and see if the decision has to be put to a vote.
Milan city officials say that if any resident has any questions you can call city hall at 660-265-4411 for more information or inquiries.
