Michigan City receives $4.6 million grant to improve infrastructure for future housing

A $4.6 million grant has been awarded to Michigan City to build critical infrastructure for future housing projects.

With the grant, new sewer systems will be installed on undeveloped land.

The grant comes from a new program lead by the Indiana Finance Authority, which supports residential housing development.

Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch (D) says the entire $4.6 million will go toward building sewer lines so future developments can begin as soon as possible.

“And we knew that some of the infrastructure around our sanitary district as far as sewer opportunities would have an impact on these projects. So we decided, okay let’s submit that and that will help alleviate some capacities on the north side,” said Nelson Deuitch.

With the GM battery plant and Amazon data center coming to nearby New Carlisle, Nelson Deuitch says this project is all about giving future workers a home.

Several mixed-use apartment projects and other city infrastructure projects will be on their way.

The goal is to develop the downtown and northern areas to make both present and future residents proud to call Michigan City their home.

“What we call workforce housing, it’s your teachers, your police officers, your firefighters. People who are middle income but still, you know you got people in the bubble right? So we want to provide that middle housing. We’re already working on some affordable housing initiatives,” said Nelson Deuitch.

Mayor Nelson Deuitch hopes for a second round as a way to continue funding for other infrastructure needs.
