The United States and Mexico may not have much riding on the result, but that won’t stop these two hated border rivals from contesting an historically testy rivalry as they meet in Guadalajara on Tuesday.
It will be the first time new USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino gets to experience this clash of CONCACAF giants first-hand, able to judge his team’s preparedness for more high-octane and competitively important games down the road.
Unfortunately for the new boss, he’ll be without a host of key players including Christian Pulisic, who along with Weston McKennie and Ricardo Pepi were sent back to their European clubs early for load management purposes.
While Mexico can point to their sparkling home record against the U.S. which includes an unbeaten all-time mark in competitive matches and just one friendly defeat ever, they have not performed well against their northern foes in some time and will hope this opportunity against a weakened side will be a chance to turn around the poor stretch of adverse results.

Mexico vs. USA prediction, odds
- Moneyline lean:Â Draw (+220)
- Score prediction:Â Mexico 0-0 USA
There’s very little riding on this match, but both teams are hoping to put some history to bed with a positive result. Mexico are mired in the midst of a long winless streak against the United States, while the USMNT has won just once ever on Mexican soil.
Ultimately, this will be a chance for Mauricio Pochettino to test his side’s pragmatism in a hostile environment after letting them free against Panama. The U.S. should do a lot of defending, and Mexico has been thwarted by low blocks in the recent past. This will be a low-scoring grinder as the visitors look to counter in the absence of many big-name players. A 0-0 or 1-1 stalemate is likely.

Mexico vs. USA best bet
- Pick: Both teams to score — No
- Odds:Â -145 (BetMGM)
While friendlies can sometimes cause both teams to let a little loose, that’s not been the case between these two teams. Both sides have found the net just twice in the last 10 matches in this rivalry across all competitions, and just once in three friendlies.
Both the U.S. and Mexico picked up a clean sheet in their other October international friendly — El Tri played to a 0-0 draw with Canada a month ago while the U.S. beat Panama 2-0 last week, with the latter sporting a 0-0 score at the halftime break. CONCACAF matches can be a slog, and this one is likely no different. The under has no value at -175, so we risk a 1-1 draw to get a slightly more palatable return.
Mexico vs. USA prop bet
- Pick: Race to 5 corners — Mexico
- Odds:Â +110 (FanDuel)
Just like Mexico did against Canada in their September scoreless draw, teams can get set-piece happy when frustrated due to a lack of attacking opportunities. El Tri mustered just 10 shots at home against their CONCACAF foes, putting only three on frame, but they racked up six corners while Canada collected five of their own.
With the U.S. likely to push forward mostly on the counter, and lacking their best outlet in Christian Pulisic, expect El Tri to dominate the corner count, and five is far from an unreasonable expectation.
