Metrolinx station upgrades earn awards – Daily Commercial News

Must read

TORONTO — Metrolinx has announced two of its stations that are part of the GO Expansion project in the GTA, Agincourt and Bramalea, have achieved LEED Gold certification.

Improvements to the stations as well as track upgrades will enable future two-way, all-day service and improved station accessibility, stated a release. Renovations included installing new canopies and snow melting technology along the platforms.

With the Agincourt station, to address trapped heat from paved surfaces and closely packed buildings that increase air pollution, the station has implemented cool roof technology to absorb less solar energy. The strategy will lower energy costs in the summer while reducing surface and air temperatures.

The station also features drought-tolerant plants that are conserving water. Bird-friendly glass, known as bird-fritting, was also used to protect local bird species and ensure biodiversity conservation in the area.

The Bramalea GO station was fit with grid-tied solar panels above the parking garage to generate enough energy to run the entire station off solar power. All areas of the station also use LED lighting fixtures.

Following recent station upgrades, the builders recycled 97 per cent of construction waste, salvaging materials for future use.

In addition to receiving the LEED Gold certification, Bramalea GO has been named the 2024 IPMI Award of Excellence winner in the design category for parking structures.

The new Bloomington GO station has also been recognized for achievement in design and sustainability. It features solar panels, LED lights, a stormwater management system and preservation of a local pond within the station property.

The station is a finalist in the Sustainability in Transportation category for Architizer’s A+ Awards.

As well, Bloomington GO received recognition from the Architecture MasterPrize with an honourable mention in the Architectural Design and Transportation category.
