BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) — Binghamton residents may begin to notice some upgrades coming around the city as the year goes on.

Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham announced the details of the city’s 2024 infrastructure improvement plan with a budget of over $9 million.

“This construction season, crews will be working in neighborhoods across Binghamton to improve our City’s critical infrastructure, from paving roads and repairing sidewalks to upgrading water and sewer systems. This year’s infrastructure improvement plan invests millions of dollars in bringing positive change to our neighborhoods, supporting good-paying construction jobs, and promoting growth across Binghamton,” Kraham said Thursday while visiting construction crews on Margaret Street.

The work is being paid for through a combination of Consolidated Local Street and the Highway Improvement Program (CHIPs) grant funds, Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, federal stimulus funds, and local capital bond.

The plan for 2024 includes:

  • Milling and paving approximately 45 streets, estimated at $2.6 million
  • Full street reconstructions, estimated at $790,000
  • Water and sewer upgrades, estimated at $4.6 million
  • Curb and sidewalk upgrades, including ADA upgrades, estimated at $1.3 million

The $4.6 million budgeted for water and sewer work will upgrade underground water and sewer systems before streets are paved, as needed.

The City uses the pavement rating technology RoadBotics to help build the annual street improvement plan. RoadBotics uses artificial intelligence to map and analyze all 151 miles of City streets, assigning numerical ratings to streets based on their condition.

Among the dozens of streets to be paved or reconstructed this season are Matthews Street, Mulberry Street, Vestal Avenue, Blackstone Avenue, Oliver Street and Lydia Street.
