The infrastructure project designed to improve traffic flow and safety on Interstate 4 (I-4) in Polk County, Florida, coming in at just under $73 Million, has been completed. This extensive project brings significant benefits to both local drivers and the region’s diverse wildlife.
During Wednesday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, Roger Young, executive director of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, emphasized Florida’s dual challenges. “Florida is home to a diverse array of wildlife,” he noted, “and is also experiencing a rise in new residents and visitors.”
Drivers will now encounter new teardrop-shaped roundabouts at the I-4 and County Road 557 interchange in Polk City. L.K. Nandam, Secretary of FDOT District One, highlighted the project’s scope, which included reconstructing the interchange, widening County Road 557 to four lanes, and creating new emergency stopping areas and improved lighting. The project also set the stage for future enhancements, including managed lanes and high-speed rail infrastructure.
A key feature of this project is a new wildlife crossing, strategically placed just east of the new roundabouts. This crossing, the first of its kind in 50 years, allows animals to safely traverse under I-4 via land or water. Over a mile of fencing along the interstate guides animals towards the crossing, reducing the likelihood of wildlife-vehicle collisions.
FDOT officials reported early success, with armadillos and possums already using the crossing. They anticipate that snakes, otters, and deer will also benefit from this safe passage in the future.
“The addition of the wildlife crossing will provide safe passage for animals to proceed to lands and safeguard drivers from potential negative interactions on the highways, keeping both our wildlife and our people safe,” said Young. “So it’s a win-win.”
