AUGUSTA (WGME) — Maine’s infrastructure is about to get a major upgrade.

Governor Janet Mills announced the state will receive $65 million to improve its electrical grid.

The federal award will fund the Flexible Interconnections and Resilience for Maine (FIRM) project.

FIRM will use cutting edge technology to enhance grid stability and allow for more cost-effective renewable energy sources.

Mills says these improvements will strengthen and modernize Maine’s electrical infrastructure and help reach her goals of reducing Maine’s dependency on fossil fuels.

The project is funded through the bipartisan infrastructure bill.
