The news that legendary department store Macy’s is set to close 66 stores in 2025 might be jarring, but 350 stores still remain and will be the focus of the brand’s growth initiatives over the next year. In December of 2024, investment firm Barington Capital and private equity firm Thor Equities actually called on the company to make “drastic changes” to make its stock more valuable, according to CNN. Some of these drastic changes would be selling off its real estate. However, critics of this plan argued that the company should be focused on long-term strategies instead of quick fixes that will leave the stock less profitable in the long-run.

Macy’s decision to close 66 stores is part of that long-term strategy pivot, as outlined in the company’s “A Bold New Chapter” strategy. The strategy also plans to take advantage of brands under the Macy’s, Inc. portfolio, like Bluemercury and Bloomingdale’s.
According to a Macy’s press release, “Fifteen Bloomingdale’s nameplate stores and at least 30 new Bluemercury stores, along with roughly 30 Bluemercury remodels are anticipated to be opened in new and existing markets over the next three years.”
In addition to growing its luxury and beauty brands, Macy’s is improving online and in-store shopping integration. The company is also modernizing its supply chain and using data to personalize customer experiences.
