The Rookwood Commons & Pavilion has further enhanced its shopping experience.
The Norwood shopping center’s new small-scale Macy’s store will have its grand opening Saturday, Aug. 24, according to the retailer’s website. The grand opening event will feature giveaways, live music and offer customers a chance to win $25, $10 or $5 Macy’s Reward Cards.
The store has already been open to customers for nearly a week after having a soft opening Aug. 10, a store manager said.
As malls and full-sized department stores continue to shutter across the country, Macy’s, a longtime retail giant once headquartered in Cincinnati, has taken on a new approach, opening small-format stores that are about a fifth of the size of its typical establishments.
In addition to Macy’s private brands, these new open-environment stores also sell sought-after market brands. The company touts a new “convenient and distinct shopping experience” for its customers.
“In October, we announced plans to accelerate the expansion of our Macy’s small-format stores, opening up to 30 additional locations through 2025. We continue to explore new locations and will share more details as we finalize our plans,” a Macy’s spokesperson said in a previous statement.

Macy’s opened its first small-format store in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in 2020 and by fall 2023, there were 12 small Macy’s locations nationwide. And in addition to this store at the Rookwood Commons, three other locations in California, Florida and the Cleveland area will also be having grand openings on the same day.
The new Macy’s store at the Rookwood Commons is at 2719 Edmondson Road, where the Bed, Bath & Beyond used to be. The store’s hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, as listed on the Macy’s website.
The expansion of this small-format concept comes as Macy’s is in the process of closing nearly a third of its full-sized department stores across the country.
The company announced in February it will shut down 150 “unproductive” locations by 2026, with 50 ceasing operations by the end of this year. It will instead prioritize investing in the remaining 350 stores as the others move toward closure.
