Leading golf course architecture firm Mackenzie & Ebert have been commissioned to design a new course in Puerto Rico, with the UK-based company creating a championship layout at Moncayo, a 1,100-acre luxury residential and resort community currently under development along the Caribbean island’s eastern coastline.
Construction of Moncayo’s 7,200-yard course is already underway, with shaping completed on the first four holes and progress continuing on practice grounds.
Speaking about the project, Martin Ebert, co-founder of Mackenzie & Ebert, said: “Designing our first course in the Caribbean has been an exciting challenge, one that allows us to blend renowned design with the natural beauty of Puerto Rico and the wonderful land at Moncayo as we grow our international footprint.
“Our design seeks to respect and enhance the island’s natural landscape with a layout that challenges golfers while offering truly breathtaking 360-degree views of the ocean and mountains for a unique sense of its location. The test with golf is always whether people will remember each individual hole at the end of the round, and I think there will be no problem at all at Moncayo – every hole will be very memorable.”

Carter Redd, President of Moncayo, said: “Partnering with Mackenzie & Ebert to introduce this breathtaking golf course to the island was an easy decision, given their track record for crafting some of the most well known golf clubs around the world. Moncayo’s Golf Club is more than a place to play golf — it is an experience that will challenge residents and their guests, while also providing a relaxed, fun round of casual golf for generational families and friends.”

In addition to the championship course, the resort will also feature a 9-hole short course and a one-acre putting course, as well as a Golf Performance Centre, where state-of-the-art facilities for instruction and private practice will be offered. The academy operation will be overseen by PGA Professional Manuel Relancio, a Brazilian national who has spent the last ten years overseeing teams at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic.
In addition to its golf offering, Moncayo will offer residents and guests a wide range of other sport facilities and leisure activities, including water sports, a private island beach, and an exclusive member’s clubhouse and athletic club with stadium courts for tennis, pickleball, and padel.
In addition to the private club amenities, the community will have full access to an Auberge Resorts Collection HoteI, with extensive dining options, a spa and wellness program, and branded resort villas and private residences.
Moncayo will also feature a 100-acre organic farm that will provides farm-to-table culinary experiences on the property. A range of shops, offices, a medical clinic and an International School are also included in the masterplan.
