Hello A-J readers!
This week brought a mix of business news, including the closure of another pizza restaurant, a $6.6 million expansion at Covenant Children’s and the opening of Grassano & Pioquinto LLC CPAs.
A second pizzeria announced its pending closure this month due to increased costs and competition.
“Since we opened this location in 2022, we have seen six to eight competitors open in a three-mile radius,” said James “Red” Williams, with Westside Pizza. “That’s a lot of pizza taken out of the market.”
Westside Pizza, 6616 Milwaukee Ave., will close Sept. 20, just over two weeks after Urban Bricks, 7610 Milwaukee Ave., closed. Together, they join La Bella Pizza, 2112 50th St., on the list of closed businesses of 2024.

Covenant Children’s announced how it will use a $6.6 million investment to add more beds, and some improvements have already been made. Construction for the pediatric expansion is ongoing, and is expected to be complete by the end of 2024. The NICU expansion will begin soon, and could be done by mid-2025, according to the release.

Grassano & Pioquinto LLC CPAs, 11001 Milwaukee Ave., opened this month. The business works “with small businesses, individuals and trusts for their accounting and tax needs.” That includes bookkeeping, tax compliance, financial statement audits and reviews. This Chamber of Commerce member will have a ribbon cutting later in November.
Good Line Beer Co. also expanded into Wolfforth on Thursday, opening Good Line Public House at 217 US Highway 62 #4. Good Line encourages customers to get some barbecue next door at Evie Mae’s, then come see the new location.
While it may not be the usual business news, Mateo Rosiles and I teamed up to talk to the Lubbock Public Library system to learn about all the cool stuff they offer. We also met Tortellini the Tortoise, Mahon Library’s own reptilian celebrity. Read the article to learn all the reasons why you should get a library card during National Library Card Sign Up Month.
Next week, I hope to circle back with several upcoming businesses and verify some rumors. We will also have our fall drink articles coming up, so keep an eye out for those.
As always, thank you for reading and supporting the A-J.
