Lubbock business news includes pickleball, mirrors, more

Must read

Hello A-J readers!

We developed two interesting features this week on the business beat, have a new best bite and a hint at a sweet article coming soon.

I had the surprise opportunity to speak with former Lea County Commissioner Rebecca Long when she found herself in Lubbock earlier this month. Long told me about her invention, which began with her frustration in a Santa Fe hotel room.

“Inventing At Last Makeup Mirror was the solution to my eyesight challenges and I am so happy to see that this lighted magnification mirror helps others as well,” Long said.

The mirror has three patents, with a fourth pending, has been endorsed by one of the original “Shark Tank” investors, and has appeared on movie sets. Read the article for all the details, including what specifically makes this mirror stand out from any other on the market.

A-J photo editor Annie Rice and I also got to check out the newly opened Lubbock Indoor Pickleball facility, 1001 S. Loop 289, Suite 110. We spoke with co-owner Dana Howland and coach Andy Carter about how the first month of business has been, how they got into the sport and why people should check it out this summer.

“When it’s hot, windy, dusty, cold, rainy – we’re your place,” Howland said.

The protection from the elements inspired their sign, which is displayed in the lobby: “Today’s Forecast: 0% Rain, 0% Heat Index, 0% Sunscreen, 0% Wind, 100% Smiles, 100% Pickleball.”

Be sure to read the article to learn why pickleball is so popular, and how you can join the fun.

On May 13, Organica Juice & Smoothie Co., new mobile business that specializes in smoothies, juice and seasonal soups and salads opened. Tangram Interiors also announced their Lubbock office at 6510 70th St.

This week, I found a new best bite. Cyrus Kabob, 421 Frankford Ave., recently opened and started offering Persian food. I ordered the Mixed Family Platter, which had three Koobideh Kabobs (ground beef), two chicken kabobs, saffron rice, grilled tomatoes and grilled sweet peppers. The Koobideh kabobs were delicious, and I’ll certainly be going back for more sometime soon.

Going into next week, I have a vineyard tour on the books. We’ll talk about the family business and their wine that funds a scholarship. Stay tuned for two articles from that, along with other business news.

As always, thank you for reading and supporting the A-J.
