Local high schooler wins Doodle for Google contest

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Shawnee Mission East High Schooler Grace Pei is one of Google’s ‘Doodle for Google’ annual contest.

Back in January, Google asked students across the country to submit their ideas for the 16 annual Doodle for Google contest. In celebration of Google’s 25 anniversary, students were to answer the prompt “My wish for the next 25 years…” through their art.

Pei did exactly this and envisioned a future focused on growth and mental well-being of individuals in their community.

“We were amazed by the submissions we received,” said Doodle Product Marketing Manager Selly Sallah. “Across ages, students showcased their visions for the future in thoughtful and unique ways. Young artists shared a range of things they wished for in the next 25 years including safer communities, technological breakthroughs, a cleaner planet, and greater unity among people. Given the challenging nature of the past few years, we were really inspired to see the many ways students have been facing the opportunities and challenges that the future brings.”

Pei’s artwork was one of 55 state and territory winner and has been selected among tens of thousands of submissions. To celebrate the winners, Google sent each of the 55 students Google hardware and swag. Google also held celebrations to showcase their work.

Along with her artwork, her submission included the following answer to the prompt.

“My wish for the next 25 years isn’t focused on tangible things, but rather the growth and mental well-being of individuals within their community. I hope that everyone can find someone that will be there to wipe away their tears, plant seeds of hope in them and mend their brokenness.”

All winners now move on to a national contest. Five national finalists will be selected and the winner will receive a $55,000 scholarship and a $50,000 technology package for their school or a nonprofit organization of their choice.
