At halftime of one of the biggest games of the season, the Detroit Lions lead the division rival Green Bay Packers by a score of 17-7.
Detroit marched right down the field on its opening drive, kicking off the scoring with a David Montgomery touchdown run to cap an 11-play, 70-yard run. Then the defenses took over for a while. Each of the next five drives ended with either a punt or a turnover, before the Lions capitalized on good field position by adding to their lead with a Jake Bates field goal.
Green Bay badly needed its offense to step up and dig out of the 10-point hole at that point, and it did just that by leaning heavily into the run game and getting Josh Jacobs into the end zone to cut down on Detroit’s lead. Not to be outdone, the Lions put together a fantastic drive in the four-minute drill, efficiently moving the ball deep into Green Bay territory and crossing the goal line once again — this time with Jahmyr Gibbs scoring on an angle route to capitalize on a fourth-and-goal opportunity.
The Lions held the ball for a significant majority of the first half, running 37 plays to Green Bay’s 21, and keeping the ball for nearly 17 minutes to Green Bay’s 13. That kept Jordan Love and company on the bench, and held the Packers’ offense at bay.
