Over 3 months after launch – LineageOS – the biggest and most well-known third party ROM now officially supports the entire Pixel 9 series.
Coming off the back of the full LineageOS 22 update, this Android 15 build is fully up to date with the QPR1 release with all security patches and privacy tweaks in tow. At last count, LineageOS was installed on over 1.5 million Android devices across the globe, which is by no means an insignificant number of people. The Pixel 9 may have been out for a while, but you can take greater control over your device if you want more flexibility by flashing this popular ROM.
LineageOS 22 brings all of the newly announced features to the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, and 9 Pro Fold with the brand new music player arguably being the headline addition. Visually, there are some minor tweaks based on the full QPR1 update including lots of under-the-hood tweaks and enhancements with things like charging limits, pseudo desktop mode on Pixel Tablet, plus a whole host of other little tweaks that build on Android 14.
As noted, all Tensor G4-powered devices are now listed in the LineageOS 22 repo, but there are no downloadable files at this stage. This comes a while after the Pixel 8a was added to the support list back in June 2024.:
As all of Pixel 9 handsets are still actively supported by Google and will be for the next 6 years, this LineageOS 22 release may only be particularly exciting for those who simply enjoy modding their phone to the fullest. Over time, though, this attention from the passionate LineageOS team could eventually result in these Tensor-powered Pixel phones getting updates beyond what Google will offer. That said, it remains to be seen how well the current-gen Pixel hardware can withstand 7 years of daily use and abuse.
