The MSU-Northern football team has lost its first three games of the season, most recently this past Saturday to Arizona Christian at home, (31-10). New Media Broadcasters discussed the overlying conversations had with head coach Jerome Souers about how his team is consistently improving on the field, undeterred by the outcomes.
“It’s difficult to see on the field at times, but our team chemistry is what’s really improved,” Souers said. “I think we’re playing together as a team.”
“Our offense just feels like it’s one step away from being really productive on a consistent basis, but we haven’t been,” Souers continued. “We’ve got to throw the ball better than we have. That will help the run game.”
“We’re getting a lot of safeties attacking the QB on the pitch and we have to be able to take advantage of the single coverage that we’re getting,” Souers said. “Offensively, as that continues to improve, that will help the defense.”
This week marks the last of the byes before MSU-Northern plays a football game for the next seven Saturdays. Coach Souers said with his team dealt with injuries that they weren’t able to overcome on the field last time out and that the young Lights are still learning, which is what can be taken away from this past week’s practices and what is still to come.
“Defensively, Johnny Toth, a really fine player (, goes down). He’s a senior and we go from senior to freshman (at the defensive line), we weren’t ready to play some of the things that we saw last Saturday,” Souers said. “So, we’re still learning. This whole thing is a journey. It’s a process.”
“It’s something that you have to trust and believe in,” Souers continued. “We don’t like the fact that we’re (0-3). It feels awful.”
“But at the same time, I know we’re continuing to improve and we’ve got to continue to battle,” Souers said. “Learning to win, it’s a process.”
The Lights will continue to hit the weight room, the classroom, film, and practices all through next week leading up to an Oct. 5 showdown in Helena against Carroll College.
