Thanks to a grant, the library in LaGrange will soon host a series of free technology classes.
Connected Nation, a nonprofit that focuses on bridging the digital divide, is partnering with the
Troup-Harris Regional Library system to offer four free technology classes in January at the LaGrange Memorial Library. The nonprofit received a grant from AT&T to provide simple technology training to different communities all over the US.
The classes will be held on Jan. 23 and Jan. 24. The first day will cover mobile device basics from 10 to 11 a.m. and Zoom conferencing from noon to 1 p.m. The second day will go over email basics from 10 to 11 a.m. and internet safety from noon to 1 p.m.
The classes will be taught in an open session, so people can ask any type of questions thy may have and they’re open to anybody and free of charge, said Alek Argueta of Connected Nation.
On Thursday, Jan. 23, people can learn how to better use their cell phones and other mobile devices. The second class will cover Zoom calls.
“For the Mobile Device Basics class, we go over multiple cell phones and tablets, and we just teach them how to do basic stuff, anywhere from sending text messages and merging calls. Then in the Zoom conferencing class, that one will teach you how to use Zoom and how to set up your Zoom account and how to host Zoom calls,” Argueta said.
During the Friday, Jan. 24 class, attendees can learn about emails and being safe on the internet.
For the Email Basics class, we just give tips on your emails, how to send email, organize your emails, and use all the email functions. Then for Internet Safety, that’s cyber security. We’ll teach people how to stay safe online, how to prevent hackers from hacking their accounts and how to maintain security when online,” Argueta said.
While the classes are not targeted at seniors, the classes are for everyone, but it’s typically older folks who are attending and getting the most benefit, Argueta said.
“Most of the time it’s been the older folks. There are still some classes that there’ll middle-aged people that still attend, but the Cyber Security one, I think that one really does benefit anybody and everybody. Because we could all use some tips on how to prevent hackers,” he said.
The classes will be taught at the LaGrange Memorial Library at 115 Alford Street in LaGrange.
