Dear Editor: Oh for heaven’s sake. I drive and bike through downtown Madison and the driving issues have almost nothing to do with bikes and bike lanes.
The rapid transit bus alone is far more disruptive. Then you add in the nearly constant construction of high rises, the annual increase in the UW population and the loss of parking spaces and you have tons of extra vehicles roaming around. Most of the worst driving areas have had no change in bike infrastructure, and in fact these changes have had almost as negative of an effect on cycling as they’ve had on driving. Remember, every biker you see is likely one car and driver removed from traffic.
Disproportionately blaming bicycle infrastructure just distorts both the issues and possible solutions.
