Vote Yes to Renew the Half-Cent Infrastructure Surtax

To the editor:

Since its approval by voters in 2016, the half-cent infrastructure surtax has been a game-changer for our communities. The funds generated have supported vital projects like roadway improvements, bridge repairs, sidewalk upgrades, stormwater enhancements, and more.

Alongside partners such as the Central Panhandle Association of Realtors, Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce, and the Bay County Contractors Association, we’ve been working to inform the community about the positive impact this surtax renewal will continue to have on Bay County’s future.

In Bay County alone, 64 projects have been completed, including the resurfacing of over 100 miles of roads and the repair or construction of six bridges since the surtax was introduced. Additionally, the county has leveraged these funds to secure $42 million in additional grants.

In 2024, $13 million has been generated for municipalities, funding numerous projects such as road and intersection improvements, stormwater initiatives to reduce flooding, and the construction of new sidewalks around schools.

This infrastructure surtax ensures that the tax is paid by all those who purchase goods and services within Bay County, removing the sole burden from property owners. 45% of the tax is generated by VISITORS. As conservative talk show host Sean Preston pointed out, “This is one of the best forms of taxation because people who visit our community are helping to pay for the infrastructure projects.”

The surtax funds are strictly designated for infrastructure use, with oversight committees in place to ensure the funds are collected, allocated, and spent according to Florida law. I urge you to VOTE YES TO RENEW THE HALF-CENT. Together, we can continue to Build a Better Bay.
