RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) – An Eastern Carolina county and town are benefiting from state transportation agency grants to help develop bicycle and pedestrian plans.

Lenoir County and the Town of Oak Island are among the six municipalities and two counties being awarded grants from the State Transportation Agency Awards 2024 Multimodal Planning Grants, according to the state.

State officials say the total allocated for the municipalities and counties is $401,000, which will be used to create an in-depth plan for expanding bicycle, pedestrian, and public transit facilities.

The press release states Lenoir County is being given grant money for a pedestrian plan, and the Town of Oak Island is receiving funding for a bicycle plan.

The program and grants are paid for through $112,000 in state funds and $289,000 in federal stat planning and research funds, according to officials.

The state says other areas awarded money are the City of Salisbury, Town of Erwin, Town of Mount Gilead, town of Pilot Mountian, and Town of Southport.

Within the last decade, state officials say about 220 projects have been generated after being submitted for funding in the State Transportation Improvement Program, a 10-year capital improvement plan that identifies state transportation projects for funding.
