LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – The Lansing School District has filed a federal lawsuit against several major tech companies, alleging “negligence” and “public nuisance,” documents obtained by News 10 confirm.
The district filed its suit against Meta, (parent company of Facebook and Instagram,) TikTok, Snapchat and Google/YouTube.
The lawsuit alleges the social media companies committed acts of “public nuisance and negligence” due to social media addiction and use among LSD students.
No specific incidents or cases related to social media that occurred on LSD property were listed in the suit.
The lawsuit was filed in the Northern District of California.
The Lansing School District Superintendent released the following statement on the suit:
“Social media is an incredible tool. It can be used to disseminate information in a rapid and clear way. It can be used to share videos and pictures. It can be used to learn and to teach. However, social media can also be used to harm, to threaten, and to intimidate. We, as a district, believe that social media companies must do more to protect and support our students when they use their product. We believe that social media companies must do more to address threats and intimidation on their platforms. We believe that social media companies must do more to limit access to inappropriate material. To that end, the Lansing School District, along with hundreds of other districts across the country are engaging in litigation. We look forward to the social media companies taking responsibility for their product and creating a safe environment for our children.”
