During a June 17 meeting, Lakeway City Council unanimously approved a license agreement allowing Google Fiber to begin installing its fiber-optic infrastructure in the city’s public rights of way.
The company plans to begin construction and roll out its network services to customers in late 2025, according to a staff report.
Google Fiber will pay 1% of its gross revenues back to the city in exchange for the license, the staff report states.

The fiber-optic installation process involves placing cables into shallow trenches dug alongside the curb of public rights of way, according to previous Community Impact reporting.

Lakeway is among multiple cities in the region to receive Google Fiber services after Cedar Park, Austin, San Antonio and Round Rock.
Google Fiber has also pursued agreements with the city of Bee Cave, but no plans are approved at this time, according to city staff.
