The Dunkirk-based Lake Erie Lightning 9-U travel baseball team recently earned a championship after two high-scoring victories in Dunkirk. The Lightning defeated North Buffalo 15-14 and North Tonawanda 17-2.

The team is coached by Bryant Watts, who founded the team a year ago as a way to train with his son and “help out other kids along the way.”

Sponsors of the team include Hall’s Hometown Insurance, Lawley Insurance, the First Ward Falcon Club, the Kosciuszko Club, Chuck Gilbert’s Collision, Kravitz Tree Service, Microblading by Heather, Custom Recycling, the Hair Bar, and Brown’s RedNeck Fishing Charter.

The Lightning will be holding tryouts for next year’s 8U, 9U, and 10U teams on Aug. 17-18 at the Dunkirk Little League fields at 198 Lake Front Boulevard near Wright Park. Indoor practices will be held from December through April, with participation in 2-3 tournaments.
