ELKINS — Elkins High School’s path to the girls soccer state tournament the past two years has been denied by Philip Barbour.
The Lady Tigers (15-4-1) will now face Lincoln, which ended the Lady Colts’ run of three straight state runner-up finishes, at 5 p.m. today in the Class AA-A, Region II final on the turf of Tiger Stadium.
When the Big 10 Conference foes met back on Sept. 5, Elkins picked up a 3-1 victory as junior Audrina Shelton turned in a hat trick.
The Lady Cougars, however, have won 11 straight games, including a victory in penalty kicks over Grafton in the sectional championship match.
During the win streak, Lincoln’s defense has surrendered just three goals.
The Lady Tigers of head coach Scott Cutright defeated Herbert Hoover, 3-2, to capture their third straight sectional title.
Senior Addy Cogar leads Elkins in goals. She had a pair in the win over Hoover.
Shelton has found the back of the net three times during the postseason and senior Layla Fletcher and sophomore Talia Nucilli twice each.
Senior defender Maddie Belan, senior Darby Bailey, senior Haylie Doyle, junior Lilly Betler and freshmen Lilly Doyle, Ziah George also figure into the offense.
Senior Erin Collins will be in goal.
Elkins last made the state tourney in 2005, capturing the title a year after finishing as runner-ups.
The Class AA-A, Region II boys championship contest between Grafton (12-4-6) and Herbert Hoover (15-6-1) will follow tonight’s girls game at Tiger Stadium.
The Class AAA state tourney field is set, with Wheeling Park, Martinsburg, Woodrow Wilson and Hurricane earning berths on Tuesday evening for the boys, while Morgantown, Washington, George Washington and Parkersburg South advanced for the girls.
