CHARLESTON — For the first time in school history, Elkins will take to the courts of the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center today for the state volleyball tournament.
The eighth-seeded Lady Tigers are set to meet top-seed and fellow Big 10 Conference member Bridgeport at approximately 10 a.m. in Class AAA quarterfinal play.
Elkins and first-year coach Rich O’Neill earned a berth to Charleston with a four-set (25-21, 21-25, 25-17, 25-17) win over Big 10 foe North Marion last Tuesday at Davis & Elkins College’s McDonnell Center in a Class AAA, co-Region 1 final.
“These girls are absolutely awesome,” O’Neill said after the win over North Marion. “They should be so proud of themselves. I’ve always said they are some of the grittiest players I’ve ever been around.”
Members of the EHS squad include Leah Ours, Lily Anderson, Aubrey Currence, Hannah Currence, Gabby Mahanes, Madyson Shreve, Samantha White, Maddy Zirkle, Maura O’Neill, Jasmin Workman, Marissa Brenwalt and Jayda Owens.
Art Louk is the assistant coach.
The remainder of the Class AAA pairings include No. 4 Winfield vs. 5 Frankfort, No. 2 Herbert Hoover vs. No. 7 Wayne and No. 3 Shady Spring vs. No. 6 Weir.
The semifinals get underway at 6:30 p.m. today, with the title game to be held on Thursday.
