Kansas advances bill aimed at water infrastructure improvements

The Kansas Legislature has advanced a House bill that would fund improvements to the state’s water infrastructure.

Kansas Ag Secretary Mike Beam says it’s a good starting point.

“In the long run, it’s not enough, but it takes some time to ramp up and do more strategic planning as to what’s the most important priority.”

The House bill, as amended, would transfer $2.5 million annually from the state’s general fund to the state water plan fund to support such projects. Beam says legislators also put $20 million into the water fund last year.

It’s a big shot. It’s a big increase. Anything that helps us get stronger focus and start having some meaningful projects will be, I think, very helpful.”

House Bill 2113 advanced Thursday on a 106 to 15 vote.

Beam told Brownfield in September years of drought have sped up conversations of water quality and availability in Kansas.
