Juventus vs Inter predictions

When it comes to Italian football, it does not get much bigger than Juventus vs Inter. The fixture’s moniker, the Derby d’Italia, says everything you need to know about its importance.

It is accurate to speak of a ‘big three’ in Serie A which also includes AC Milan, whose seven successes in the Champions League make them Italy’s most successful club in continental competition.

Domestically, though, Juventus and Inter rank first and second for all-time achievements. Juve lead the way for scudetti with 36, followed by Inter on 20 and Milan on 19.

The Bianconeri also top the pile for Coppa Italia triumphs. They have lifted that trophy 16 times, while Inter are joint-second with nine wins.

The term Derby d’Italia was coined in the 1960s by Gianni Brera, the legendary football journalist who was so influential in Italy. Juventus and Inter were the dominant sides back then, and the competition between them over the  subsequent decades has bred significant animosity.

Juventus ruled supreme in Serie A for most of the 2010s, but Inter have had the better of this fixture more recently. Juve have not won any of the last five editions, while the last 10 head-to-head clashes have brought just two victories for the Bianconeri.

As well as earning the bragging rights more frequently over the last few years, Inter have been more successful in a broader sense too. They reached the Champions League final in 2023 and won the title last year. Inter are aiming to make it back-to-back championships this term.

It is tight at the top. Napoli sit at the summit of the standings heading into the weekend, but they are just one point ahead of Inter. The bookies nevertheless have Inter down as narrow favourites, probably because their underlying numbers are more impressive.

On the flip side, Napoli have no distractions: they are out of the Coppa Italia and did not qualify for Europe last term. Inter, for their part, are fighting for silverware on three fronts. That could be a factor as we approach the business end of the campaign.

Juventus have more modest ambitions as they chase Champions League football. But their form has picked up of late, making them dangerous opponents for Inter.

Juventus vs Inter betting tips

Can Inter boost their Serie A title chances by beating their rivals Juventus on Sunday?

Draw

Juventus have drawn too many matches to be involved in the title race, but there has been a notable improvement in their performances in recent outings.

Including a 2-1 victory over PSV in the Champions League on Wednesday, Juve have won three games in a row – a feat they had not accomplished all season.

Thiago Motta’s team have dominated possession throughout 2024/25, but far too often they have been toothless up front.

With the January addition to the squad of Randal Kolo Muani, there are signs that Juventus are starting to carry more of a threat in the final third.

Inter are a stubborn bunch, though. They suffered a surprise 3-0 defeat by Fiorentina earlier this month, but that felt like an aberration. Simone Inzaghi’s charges have only lost one other game this term.

Both teams may have to settle for a share of the spoils in this one.

Both teams to score

Inter are the best attacking team in Serie A. Even Gian Piero Gasprini’s Atalanta, rightly held up as one of the most entertaining sides in Europe, have scored four fewer goals than the Nerazzurri.

Inzaghi’s team have made the net ripple on 58 occasions in 24 games, which works out at almost 2.5 goals every 90 minutes.

Inter have also scored a league-high 30 times away from home, so we like their chances of breaching Juventus’ backline.

Thiago Motta’s men have had more problems in forward areas than Inter this season, but they have scored in 11 consecutive Serie A games.

With all that in mind, neither team is likely to keep a clean sheet at the Allianz Stadium.

Marcus Thuram to score any time

Marcus Thuram had a decent debut season at Inter last time out, scoring 15 goals in all competitions. But he has taken his game to another level in 2024/25.

Indeed, we still have three months of the campaign remaining and Thuram has already got his name on the scoresheet 13 times in Serie A alone.

Only Mateo Retegui of Atalanta and Moise Kean of Fiorentina have been more prolific than Thuram in Italy’s top flight.

Having said that, the goals have dried up for Thuram of late. His last 11 appearances have yielded just one strike.

The Frenchman will doubtless return to form soon. As far as Inter are concerned, there would be no better time than Sunday evening.
