Former Minnesota Vikings star Jared Allen took a shot at the New York Jets during a Tuesday news conference about his selection for enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
It all started when Allen was expressing excitement about the future of the Vikings organization while also ruing the team coming up short of winning a Super Bowl.
“I’ll state the obvious. We’ve been close for a long time,” Allen said. “The next hurdle in the Vikings organization is, ‘How do we get there?’ And that’s the truth. And the reality is only one team gets there every year.”
Allen then opined that he would “rather be close” to winning a title than being toward the back of the NFL pack. That’s when he unleashed an unexpected dig at the Jets.
“Being the Jets would be miserable right now,” Allen said through a smile. “I just can’t believe anyone took that job. Rough one.”
Naturally, Allen’s comments drew laughter from the reporters on hand for his media availability. The 42-year-old continued to play to the crowd, noting that he could take digs at any NFL team he wanted now that he’s nearly a decade into his retirement.
“You get to say this stuff when you retire,” Allen cracked. “You can say whatever you want. It’s awesome! Talk bad about all the organizations because they don’t pay paychecks. It’s awesome!”
The Jets and new head coach Aaron Glenn may not take kindly to Allen’s quip and could use it as bulletin board material. However, New York isn’t facing Minnesota until 2026, so the Jets won’t be able to earn vengeance against Allen’s former team this season unless the two face off in Super Bowl 60.
The Vikings beat the Jets 23-17 in their last meeting, which came in Week 5 of the 2024 NFL season in London.
