FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The first construction contract for infrastructure improvements for Downtown Fresno, funded by the State of California, has been awarded, Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer announced.
On Thursday, city officials say the Fresno City Council awarded a water main and sewer main replacement construction contract to Floyd Johnston Construction Co. Inc., for $18,784,925.50 to bring downtown water and sewer facilities to current standards.
According to officials, the project also paves the way for future improvements that will increase capacity, furthering Mayor Dyer’s vision of a vibrant downtown with a residential population of 10,000 people.
“By putting this money to work quickly and efficiently, we are showing proof of performance to the State as we await further previously promised funding. Great cities have great downtowns, and this is the beginning of something great for Downtown Fresno!” Dyer said.
“Ensuring the reliability of our city’s infrastructure is imperative as we continue to lead housing and business efforts in the heart of our city,” said District 3 Councilmember Miguel Arias. “These investments are critical in rebuilding the foundation for revitalizing Downtown Fresno.”
The scope of work focuses on the area bound by Tuolumne Street, Highway 99, Highway 41, and M Street and includes the replacement of 14,315 linear feet of water mains and 5,576 linear feet of sanitary sewer mains, including trenching, excavation, water and sewer service transfers, pavement restoration, repair and reconstruction, officials say.
Officials say the project was funded by the State of California as part of the Downtown Public Infrastructure Improvements Projects.
