Indian River third graders shop for Toys for Tots

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – Indian River students swarmed Ollie’s Bargain Outlet Monday morning but weren’t shopping for themselves.

Dozens of Evans Mills Primary third graders filled up shopping carts with toys to give to Toys for Tots.

From Nerf Guns to CandyLand, the kids raised money at school, later used to purchase the Christmas gifts.

The annual event typically raises between $3-5 thousand for Toys for Tots.

One student raised $500 to shop with, filling up two carts on her own.

“I asked a lot of my family members, I asked some teachers. My family was giving me 50s, 40s, 30s, and 20s,” said Kamella Richards.

“It’s super sweet watching them shop for themselves and watching them shop for other kids. They get much more enjoyment out of shopping for other people than they do for themselves, I believe,” said parent Jessica White.

All the toys bought were put in a Toys for Tots bin and later transported to the toy center, where local families will be able to browse.
